Put a timer on it, to turn on the power to heat the water only during certain times of the day, say, before washing dishes and showering. 4 hours per day on time will save lots of energy versus being on for 24 hours! Also, lowering the water temperature set point to no more than 120° F will save additional energy. • If you have soft water an "on demand" water heater will also save energy. • Put the maximum amount of insulation in your attic to prevent heat loss; and, on top of it, lay down a Radiant Barrier material to save even more on energy costs: • Fill any cracks around doors, windows and foundation with caulking. Even small cracks waste a lot of energy. • Closed loop Geothermal Heat Pumps are 400% efficient and are a little cheaper to operate than natural gas furnaces. • Have a power-factor controlling Capacitor bank installed at your circuit breaker panel. Pay back is about 18 months. • Install a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) controller on your furnace air handling fan. Most of the time it will run at a low speed to equalize the temperature in your home. Only when the heating or cooling kicks in does the fan speed raise up to full speed. • Install a programmable thermostat and lower the house temperature during the day, and at night, by 5-10° F (Not advised if you have a heat pump system) • Install a ceiling fan in high ceiling rooms to equalize the temperature. |
